In this video, Phil Chadder, who was then Chaplain of HM Prison, Brixton, talks about the value of the theological education he received at Oak Hill. Says Phil:

Everything we do is against a backdrop of pain. When someone's partner has a baby, the fi rst time they meet that baby is in social visits and they can't do the things a dad wants to do. So while this is a more hopeful place, there's still a lot of emotional pain. It's a very raw environment for the men to live in.

I chose Oak Hill because it has a reputation for being very thorough and biblical, where the lecturers are committed to gospel ministry. I also liked the fact there was a whole range of students there. We had people who were really sort of planet-brainy, and there were also people like me who could just kind of stumble along.

Learning in a community like that, where the lecturer's prime concern wasn't the content of your head but the content of your character, was a great preparation for ministry.
