Oak Hill has trained Church of England ordinands alongside other students for decades. We find it a richly collaborative experience for those going into the Church of England to learn with those serving in other contexts.

Ordinands study mainly alongside other students, with some specific modules and training for those going into Church of England ministry.

We have three standard ordination training pathways approved by the Church of England's Ministry Development Team (MDT).

Most ordinands apply for either the DipHE or BA (Hons), depending on how many years training they are recommended for. Those who already hold an undergraduate degree in theology apply for the MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission.

This is available to be studied full time or part-time.

The MA is studied over two years with students taking 240 credits, mainly at Level 7. There are other compulsory elements to their training including a weekly church placement, chapel attendance and involvement in a weekly Fellowship group.

All our Level 7 modules are taught in the flexible ways outlined here, meaning each year certain modules are taught as intensives or in a weekly format.

Compulsory modules (140 credits -  all modules 20 credits unless stated)

  • TMM42220 Research and Reflection: Resources and Methods (Level 7)

  • TMM42360 Dissertation in Theology, Ministry and Mission (Level 7) (60 credits)

  • TMM3627 Issues in Pastoral Ministry (Level 6)

  • TMM3337 Word Ministry II (Level 6)

  • TMM2321 Developing Ministry and Worship in Context (Level 5)

Elective modules (100 credits)

Every year we offer:

  • TMM40320 Minor Prophets in Canonical Context [Advanced OT Studies]

  • TMM40420 The Theology of Luke-Acts [Advanced NT Studies]

  • TMM40920 Incarnation: The Glory of God in the Face of Christ [Advanced Topic in Christian Doctrine]

  • TMM44320 Leadership, Discipleship and Holiness in Contemporary Culture [Christian Doctrine and Contemporary Culture]

  • TMM49120 Complex Issues in Pastoral Care

Each year, two of the following are offered:

  • TMM40120 History of Biblical Interpretation [The Bible and Christian Faith]

  • TMM43820 The Church and the Public Square [Further Advanced Topic in Christian Doctrine]

  • TMM49020 Missiology for a Changing World [Advanced Missiology]

  • TMM46720 The Theology and Spirituality of the Child

Any other training pathway would be considered non-standard and would therefore require the agreement of the sponsoring diocese, MDT and Oak Hill.

“I love the fact that lots of the lecturers here have been pastors themselves so they are rooted in their experience and what it actually look like in day to day ministry. The Anglican stream is a real strength and I have appreciated learning alongside brothers and sisters from different denominations from whom I can learn much.”
